Over the past months we have spent a lot of time riding along the irrigation canals in the Phoenix/Gilbert/Chandler/Mesa area. The trails are usually paved although some sections are "granular". The sign above reflects the variety of path users.
Since the canals were being built since the late 1800s to, primarily, serve the agricultural communities, many acreages are still located along these waterways. Housing has mostly taken up the land in these areas but we still see hay fields (flood irrigated), cattle, dairy cows, horses and even two large tortoises 😊right in the city.
Apache Junction and other outlying communities are populated with many acreages that keep horses and there are many horse trails throughout the mountains in the area. Indeed many of the hiking trails we have been on are also used by horse travellers and one often sees a collection of horse trailers at the trailhead.
Sometimes we encounter riders on sandy verges beside paved city streets here in AJ; one day we even saw three horses and riders "parked" and at a gas station!
