Home in the Great White North

Good Morning, Shelby MT!

Hello Rocky Mountains west of Hwy 2 in the Lethbridge area

Deteriorating visibility as we arrive in Calgary just after 1pm

Another (mostly) good day on the road....we did have an episode of slippery roads and ice fog for a few miles on either side of the border but other than that it was smooth sailing.

We set about unpacking from our winter as soon as we arrived in Calgary; snow was already in the air and, by dark, the world had been turned to white! We will still have to return our trailer to storage sometime tomorrow. The weather forecast suggests scattered flurries with light accumulation and temps around -9C /16F until the end of tomorrow.

Our spectacular neighbours and friends, Dave & Barb, welcomed us home with help unloading, comfort food and warm conversation. It's good to be back across the hall from them!

Home Tomorow

We're settled for the evening in an hotel room in Shelby MT - only a few hours drive from Calgary!

Our day started with scraping ice from the windshield

This photo pretty well tells the story of our day on the road. There was a variety of weather from sunny periods, ice pellets, wind, and ending the day with a  snow squall and poor visibility. Roads were dry for the most part so it was another easy driving day!

Made it to Montana

    Looking NE

   Looking NW

We arrived in Dillon, Montana in late afternoon and the sky was dramatic! It was another good drive with dry roads, winds in our favour, and mostly bright skies.

It seems there may be a little precipitation overnight in this area but it looks like another good day ahead of us in the morning. This will be our last night in our trailer love nest (😉) as weather tomorrow night is expected to drop to 20F/ -8C.

So the Drive Begins....

Balloons lift off at 6:30 am on a calm morning looking for some wind.

Good day for a drive, tho'....😊

Later today:

We had smooth sailing to Mesquite, NV. Lucky us, travelling west, as there were miles-long delays at Kingman, AZ and Boulder City, NV heading the other direction!

The Morning After the Night Before

Good Morning, sunshine!

Grandson Zachary spent the night with Grandpa and Grandma in the trailer. We had fun!

Later today....

...we cycled with Peter & Anita on the paths of Scottsdale and Tempe. It was a very warm day so we were happy for any shade we could find along the route!

In the evening we were invited for a meal with "the family". Our son-in-law's parents, Ron & Elise, have been the best of hosts during this week!

Silver Alert

This evening, driving home, we saw an overhead message on Loop 101:

"SILVER ALERT",  a vehicle description and plate #

Here's the explanation from Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) in 2014:

"When it comes to delivering important safety and travel info to motorists on the road, ADOT’s growing system of overhead message boards... helps get the job done. Now, those boards have a new task…"

"In addition to commute times, travel alerts and various safety messages, the digital signs will also inform drivers of Blue and Silver Alerts."

Similar to Amber Alerts, Blue and Silver Alerts are issued by law enforcement officials to notify and seek help from the public.

Silver Alerts will be issued following the report of a missing person who is 65 or older (there are several other conditions that must be met before a silver alert is issued – get all the details by reading the law's entire text on the state legislature's site).

Blue Alerts will be issued following an attack on a law enforcement officer if the suspect has fled the scene of the offence (again, there are several conditions that must be met – details may be found within the law's text)."

This morning we made preparations for our relocation to Phoenix tomorrow.

We will stay there for a week and enjoy the company of our daughter's family as they visit with her in-laws.

The Dave & Daphne Show

Image result for dave & daphne photos

Last night we enjoyed a Dinner Show at Rock Shadows with Dave & Daphne. Having seen this duo several times previously, we were happy to spend St. Patrick's Day not celebrating St. Patrick's Day!

We were sure sorry to miss all the silliness of "Green Day" at Paul's Park in Brownsville - golf carts, pets and people dressed for the occasion followed by a traditional meal of corned beef, cabbage and potatoes!

Spring Bloom

Opuntia, Prickly Pear

This type of Prickly Pear cactus is very common in the Park and is just beginning to bloom - so glad we got to stay long enough to see all the spring flowerings! The warm weather of the past few days (and the touch of weekend rain) are getting everyone's hopes up for a good show of desert blooms.

Just today on our ride we noticed many plants along roadsides and in landscaped areas are bursting with colour!

The Farm at Agritopia

This afternoon we drove to the Farm at Agritopia in Gilbert because our references suggested that we could purchase Tepary beans* in the store at this complex.

There were no beans to be had and, except for the eateries on site, not much of anything going on there at this time of year. However, it was as weird and wonderful as the coined phrase, agritopia, would suggest!

The community was kind of freaky in appearance i.e. not southwestern in any way (lawns!) - almost like the neighbourhood in the Jim Carrey movie "The Truman Show" , where an insurance salesman/adjuster discovers his entire life is actually a television show.

Apparently, the land was originally reclaimed from the desert in the 1920s, to grow cash crops such as alfalfa, cotton and wheat. Over the years, under the stewardship of the Johnson family, the land became a vision to preserve agriculture in an ran area rapidly becoming urbanized.

They "worked with land planners, builders and the Town of Gilbert to create Agritopia a community that preserved agriculture in an urban-relevant way, and village life with vibrant connected neighbour hoods. commerce, education and open spaces. The Farm was carved out of the original farm, destined to become a permanent expression of the joy and timelessness that family".

At the Agritopia website you can read their story and see a film of the site.

*Tepary bean, is native to the southwestern U.S. and Mexico and has been grown there by the native peoples since pre-Columbian times. It is more drought-resistant than the common beans and is grown in desert and semi-desert conditions from Arizona through Mexico to Costa Rica.

We tasted them in hummous at the Desert Botanical Garden when RL's brother and wife were here in Feb. ; they wanted seed to attempt to grow them in Alberta!

Daylight Saving Time

Arizona does not observe DST. Nor does Saskatchewan.

These seem to be the only areas in continental North America that do not change time although several jurisdictions (including our home province of Alberta) are considering legislation to abandon DST.

By the way, yesterday's "0% chance of precipitation" weather prediction proved incorrect throughout the night and it was still showering in the morning!

Bluegrass Festival

The Arizona Bluegrass Association sponsored their first Bluegrass Festival this weekend in Apache Junction. Admission was free!

We walked over to the park with our chairs and enjoyed music from 10 am until showery weather sent us hurrying home at 3:30 in the afternoon!  The overcast skies of the day were surprising, unusual and pleasant for concert  goers but how heartbreaking the rain must have been for the performers and organizers of this inaugural festival - especially when the newspaper weather forecast read "0% of precipitation" !!!!

We listened to many great acts but the event of the day for us was the Jam Pak Blues 'n' Grass Neighborhood Band* seen here. It was so exciting to see these young folk making and enjoying traditional music!

*"In 1994 something new happened. Jam Pak Blues 'N' Grass Neighborhood Band was born in an otherwise quiet Chandler, AZ neighborhood. More than two decades later – with only shoestring funding – this multi-cultural, multi-generational band is going and growing ever stronger.
In the care of Anni Beach, founder and band leader, folk and bluegrass music has come alive for dozens of eager children. Enfolded in the love of music, community, food, travel, life experiences and love itself, growing numbers of otherwise contemporary kids are learning and making authentic American folk music." Snake in Scottsdale

pituophis
gopher snake a.k.a. bull snake

We spotted this snake as it made its way across the bike path! It was about a metre / 3+ ft in length and seemed a little rattled by us following it into this brush beside the path. Gopher snakes are not venomous.

Chorus and Chimes

Image result for chime choir

Tonight, the chorus group we started singing with in January had its year end concert. We were joined in the main hall by the chimes group. It was a fine musical evening!

Our chorus sang mostly in three parts (SAB) and performed a wide range of music from spirituals to a Gershwin medley to Andrew Lloyd Webber's "All I Ask of You" from Phantom of the Opera.

We had never really experienced the music of chimes - something akin to handbells - where each player has 2 (or more) notes to play in each melody. It was enchanting.

Click here to listen to a school chime choir - it will give you an idea of what we heard!

The End is Near...

 Not in the biblical sense....😉

Our time at Rock Shadows Park in Apache Junction is quickly drawing to a close. We'll have been here 4 months and will start our trek back to Calgary in two weeks.

Our first stop will be in Phoenix so we can be near our daughter and family as they visit her in-laws who have a winter place in north Phoenix. Looking forward to that!

After that, the weather watching will commence as we plot our route for the long drive back. Hope the snow and cold get over themselves before we get back - March came in like lion so we may be dreaming....?

Sunday Morning Wilderness Hike

The first interesting thing we spotted were Gambel's Quail perched in a dead tree. These desert birds are typically ground dwellers, taking flight only in extreme situations! They are so entertaining by the nodding of their comma-shaped topknot of feathers as they speed along and by their voices which seem to sound like throat-singing.

Desert trail marker

The goal of today's outing was to visit the fireplace, likely a remnant of some prospector's camp. It took about an hour on a steady climb to reach this quiet valley in the Superstition Mtns.
