Windy and Warm

This is is the title of Rose Lynn's favourite instrumental as played by Doc Watson*; the story goes it was written by John D. Loudermilk for Chet Atkins in 1961.

Windy and warm also describes our weather pattern of the past few days. It means that we have been able to bike and hike and tell each other "This is the weather we came for!" We've had winds up to 40 mph/25 kph and temperatures in the high 70sF / mid 20s C.

Bumper Replacement

Before with large dent on right corner

(and a couple of scrapes in other areas).

Thank you Greg for helping Bill with the bumper swap.

Amazingly, the project only took about an hour or so to accomplish.

Now Bill doesn't have to suffer everytime he walks by the bumper!

Rose Lynn notices dustbunnies but not dented bumpers....

Weather's Parting Shot

Late afternoon yesterday, looking east as the sun sets.

As we watched this double rainbow form up in the rays of the setting sun, we hoped that it foreshadowed a weather change. This morning we awoke to calm, clear blue skies with the full moon* setting in the west. We're good to go!!!

*January's full moon is commonly called the wolf moon because wolves are mating at this time of year and can be heard howling on cold nights according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. The origin name stems from native american and other northern cultures which describe this moon as "wolves run together".

The first full moon of the new year, known as the wolf moon, will shine in the night sky Thursday. January's full moon reached peak illumination at 12:54 p.m. ET, but it will appear full through Friday evening, according to NASA.

Getting Over It

Between the weather (several days of scattered showers), and Bill's fight with a phlegmy cough and snotty (!) nose, it's been a slow go here at Rock Shadows πŸ˜’

Today the sun has been peaking out, the temperatures rose into the low 60s F / mid teens C, and Bill is starting to feel better πŸ˜€

Luckily Rose Lynn did not catch the bug (not covid).

Typically Apache Junction

Apache Junction is horse country; acreages with horses, horses on the hiking trails, a rodeo and...
horses tied up outside the Tumbleweed Bar & Grill!

Later Today...

While Bill was playing bridge, Rose Lynn went with three others to the Boyce Thompson Aboretum*, east of Apache Junction. It was a lovely afternoon, in a lovely place, with lovely company.

The highlight of the day, however, was meeting some coati feeding on the fruit of date palms along the trail. The park interpreters said it was a group of about 30 - three moms and their kittens which are estimated to be about 4-6 weeks old. They fed on the ground nosing up insects and nimbly climbed the trees for the fruit.

Boyd Lake

The coati is an agile, fruit-loving, meat-eating insectivore—an opportunistic omnivore—that is as at home in the trees as it is snuffling along the forest floor. Weighing as much as a large housecat, these mostly diurnal mammals are native to Central and South America, and parts of the southwestern US. Visually, the coati resembles a cross between a dog, a monkey, and a raccoon. It is related to the racoon.

P.S. Bill won a few quarters at bridge!

Back on our Bikes 😊

Weather and schedules finally cooperated and we've had a couple of rides.

After being off the bikes since Sept 29th, we have to recondition our bodies and minds. Probably too much information but... primarily we have to redevelop our butt calluses (using a term in the cycling world)! In other words, get used to sitting on our bike seats again.

Too graphic?!

???!!!

The story goes that about 8:30 Thursday evening a speeding car failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the road through a drainage ditch, launching into the air, flying through a block wall and landing on 4 vehicles (utility trailer, automobile, off road vehicle and a motor home) stored in our RV park. Rumour has it that the driver was drug infused and that he walked away.

It's All Relative

SO...we've all been complaining about the weather here in Apache Junction; temperatures have been near freezing overnight for the past while and daytime temperatures have hovered in the 40s F / single digits C range. We had rain again yesterday.

MEANWHILE in Calgary, Alberta...overnight temperatures have dipped to -30s C (nearly the same F!).

Some rainy day drama yesterday looking N from Apache Junction mid afternoon

Superior Day

It was a superior day in the historic mining town of Superior Arizona*, about 50km/ 30 m east of Apache Junction.

First we hiked on the Queen Creek section of L.O.S.T (Legends of Superior Trail); it was "fresh" but sunny and calm. Interestingly, the creek was running dry - never seen it this way.

Then we revisited a favourite eatery, the Silver King Smokehouse and Saloon, sitting in the sun and filling our faces with loaded fries (House Made Fries, Pulled Pork, Slaw, House BBQ & Ranch).

Next stop was Superior Farm-to Fantastic Farmer's Market where we found fresh veggies, baking and crafts.

Finally, we listened to Music in the Park, live music sponsored by the local Superior Optimists.

*According to Wikipedia, Superior was once part of a huge Apache reservation, but after silver and copper deposits were discovered, those areas were withdrawn from the reservation and returned to the public domain (shocking but typical?). Superior was then founded as a mining town for the Silver King and the later Magma mines; silver was mined at first, and then transitioned to copper. Currently, the huge Resolution Copper deposit is being explored (also controversial for its location in areas sacred to the indigenous peoples) . The town was originally called Queen, then Hastings and, finally, the Superior townsite we know today was laid out in 1902, and named after the Lake Superior and Arizona Copper Company (LS&A).

Enjoying our Activities

Wednesday, Janine and the boys visited Apache Junction while Colin worked remotely. It was a cool start but by the time we were into our hike, we were all down to our first layers. Magnus was in shorts and has been every day since they arrived!

Next stop was the grocery store for supplies for Mom & the boys to make the Clobbopus* Vanilla Punch, made with vanilla ice cream, orange sherbert, gingerale, orange soda and blueberries. (*Clobbopus is a small, off-white cephalopod PokΓ©mon. It has small, blue eyes with horizontal slit-shaped pupils, and an orange mask-shaped pattern around them)

Then back to our place for our lunch, the dessert and a game.

Enjoying the yummy dessert.

The family flew back to Calgary Thursday evening.

Thursday saw us getting back to some more of our regular winter activities. Choir started, we enjoyed a meal from the Thursday Food Truck and then went to play euchre. It's all good!

Thursday's sunset after storm clouds rolled over us

Friday and we're getting in the groove - walking for groceries, doing laundry, Bill's off to play Bridge in another park and Rose Lynn is digging into her quilting plans!

Back on our Blog!

Well, it took awhile to get on the road, but we arrived Dec 28 in Arizona for three months!

Bill's prostate cancer (diagnosed in 2007) required a change in medication this fall, but by Dec 18th, we were given our "ticket to drive" and he doesn't need to be back for more testing until early April.

Our 2817 km drive was uneventful - dry roads once we got out of Calgary (!), clear skies and light winds. The temperatures were well below freezing all the way to Arizona so stayed in hotels until our last night on the road!

We've stayed busy since our arrival, enjoying a hike with our gang and spending time with our daughter Janine & family and her in-laws in north Phoenix. New Year's Eve we had fun outdoors at Christmas at the Princess in Scottsdale - glad they had heaters to gather around (and cook s'mores!) as it was cool in the dark. It was a great way to have a family NYE!

Enjoyed the train ride around the Park

You can see a warming/cooking area in the foreground.
We all rode the ferris wheel and got an aerial view of the Park and the mountains in and around Phoenix.

Happy New Year to All!
