The first interesting thing we spotted were Gambel's Quail perched in a dead tree. These desert birds are typically ground dwellers, taking flight only in extreme situations! They are so entertaining by the nodding of their comma-shaped topknot of feathers as they speed along and by their voices which seem to sound like throat-singing.

The goal of today's outing was to visit the fireplace, likely a remnant of some prospector's camp. It took about an hour on a steady climb to reach this quiet valley in the Superstition Mtns.
The skeleton of a dying/dead saguaro forms a fan in the morning sun
Chuparosa (acanthus)
like the habitat of a mountain wash (dry stream bed, here)
Their red trumpet-like blooms are an early sign of spring
(we think bees and hummingbirds like these)
